Liverpool move for Anthony Gordon unlikely this summer
Liverpool ‘like’ Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, but a summer transfer is unlikely, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Gordon’s stock has risen considerably since his move to Tyneside last year. The 23-year-old has bagged 11 goals and ten assists (16 big chances created) in 35 Premier League appearances this season.
His impressive displays for the Magpies earned him an England call-up, and he could very well be on the plane to the European Championship this summer.
Just over a year after joining Newcastle, he’s generating transfer rumours again. He has been linked with a move to the Reds.
Liverpool may be looking to bolster their wing depth, particularly with Mohamed Salah’s future up in the air. The Egyptian is about to enter the final year of his contract, and there are no concrete talks regarding an extension.
With the Saudi League prepared to pursue Salah’s signature again this summer, there is so much uncertainty surrounding his future.
Luis Diaz has also been linked with a move away from Anfield, with fans disappointed with his output. Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing him this summer if he becomes available.
Gordon, who previously played in Merseyside for Everton, could be a potential target for Liverpool in the future, but not this summer window.
The Daily Star claims Eddie Howe’s side will demand £100 million for Gordon. This sum will potentially put off the Liverpool CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, who is not a fan of shelling obscene amounts for players, preferring to make bargain pick-ups in the transfer window.
However, it is worth noting that Newcastle will likely sell one or two players to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), and Gordon could follow the exit door to help the club generate funds.
The Liverpool interest is there even though a move will likely not come this summer, but this is one to watch for the future.
