Atherton was being treated for brain damage at the hospital when his family flew out to Turkey for his support, Warrington Guardian reports.

However, the dad-of-two died of the injuries, the family shared in a tragic online post.

A fundraiser has now been set up on JustGiving for the Brit dad to bring his body back home as his family faces a “living nightmare.

Atherton’s wife said in the post that her “life has changed forever”.

“I lost the other half of me & my daughters lost their amazing father.

“I would be typing forever trying to put into words how much we love you & already miss you & how much you mean to us, you’re our world Wes & life will never be the same,” the post continued.

A target of £10,000 has been set to cover medical bills and bring back Atherton’s body.

The campaign has raised more than £6,440 as of this morning.

Close friends and family have paid tribute to the “loving” dad, saying they could not have asked for a better person in their lives.

One person wrote on Facebook: “Can’t even put into words the hole that’s been left in our lives from losing you.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better big brother. I miss you so much. You are loved forever Wes Atherton.”
