Advocates call for PFAS protections to pass at NYS Capitol
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The fight against PFAS continues at the New York State Capitol. Environmental advocate groups are calling on state lawmakers to pass protections against forever chemicals before the session ends in June.
A package of bills is currently in committee that would eliminate PFAS from common household products and require testing for the presence of PFAS in water.
"We need to know where this PFAS is coming from," Kate Donovan with the Natural Resources Defense Council said. "Currently, there are no enforceable limits to PFAS discharges to our waterways nor are regulated entities required to even tell us what PFAS are coming out of their discharges."
PFAS have been linked to an increased risk of some cancers and developmental issues in children. Multiple Capital Region communities have detected the forever chemicals in their soil and waterways.
