“Unfortunately, there is more than one doctor to focus on in this series,” says Ashley Michel Hoban, the showrunner for Peacock’s anthology limited series “Dr. Death.” “So for this season, we focus on Dr. Paolo Macchiarini (played by Edgar Ramírez), who is a surgeon and a researcher working on these tracheal implants. And he is implanting basically fake tracheas, kind of false tracheas for patients with no other options.”
At first it looks like Macchiarini’s work is a miraculous success, but after he gains worldwide attention, some colleagues begin to question his practices. “A few doctors that he works with sort of start to chip away at some of the research behind this magical cure that he’s come up with,” Hoban says.
The series also follows Paolo’s relationship with Benita Alexander (played by Mandy Moore), a reporter who meets the surgeon while working on a story about his miracle cures. “Between the whistleblowing doctors and Benita, we have these two forces joining together to hold this man responsible. All of his patients start to get sicker, and sicker, and eventually pass away.”
“Dr. Death” is a true crime drama anthology series created by Patrick Macmanus, based on the podcast of the same name. Season 1 focused on Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), an American neurosurgeon convicted after permanently mutilating his patients, killing two of them. Season 2 dramatizes the story of Swiss-Italian surgeon and medical researcher Paolo Macchiarini, convicted after experimenting on his patients.
