NYC plans to redevelop 122-acre stretch of Brooklyn coastline
RED HOOK, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Mayor Eric Adams announced plans to redevelop 120 acres of Brooklyn’s coastline into housing, a modern maritime port, and green space.
The redevelopment area, operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, stretches over a mile from the southern edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park down to Red Hook, according to Bloomberg.
“For 20 years, skeptics thought this deal couldn’t get done, but our administration prioritized the ‘Harbor of the Future’ and now we have the potential to create thousands of new jobs, generate billions in economic impact, and build a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood and modern maritime port focused on getting trucks off the roads,” said Mayor Adams.
Adams also unveiled an initial $80 million investment to stabilize and repair Piers 7, 8, and 10 at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal and an additional $15 million to fund a new electrified container crane for operations at the terminal.
“By assuming control of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Red Hook in our city government’s largest real estate transaction in recent memory, our administration is demonstrating that we will continue to deliver big wins for New Yorkers, day after day," Adams said on Tuesday.
The city has submitted grant applications for over $350 million in federal funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Transportation to transform the terminal into a modern maritime facility, officials said. The hope is the terminal will process international cargo handling, and low-carbon, last-mile freight movement, officials said.
