Hogan, Trone get most votes in Carroll County in primary Senate race

Carroll County primary voters chose Hogan and Trone in the race to replace U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin.

Former two-term Gov. Larry Hogan was the clear winner in Carroll County’s Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Ben Cardin. Hogan garnered 10,589 total votes, according to the county’s unofficial election results as of Wednesday morning.

And though U.S. Rep. David Trone earned the most votes during Carroll’s Democratic primary, with 3,921 votes, he lost statewide to Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.

Alsobrooks defeats Trone in Senate primary, will face Hogan in November

Alsobrooks, who garnered 2,731 votes in Carroll, will face off with Hogan in November’s general election.

The final vote tally is not yet available, according to Erin Perrone, director of the Carroll County Board of Elections. The counting of mail-in ballots must be completed by May 24.

“Election law permits us to count ballots that are postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day (May 14th) as long as we receive the ballot by 10 a.m. on Friday, May 24th,” Perrone stated in an email.

Mail-in ballots will be counted on Thursday, starting at 10 a.m., at the Robert Moton Center gymnasium, 300 S. Center St., in Westminster.

As of Wednesday, Hogan had garnered 2,095 votes in Carroll’s early voting and another 1,513 from mail-in ballots, according to the unofficial results reported by the Maryland State Board of Elections.

Trone had earned 837 votes in early voting and another 1,203 in mail-in ballots. Alsobrooks earned 555 votes in early voting and 461 from mail-in ballots.

Former President Donald Trump won Carroll’s Republican primary for president with a total of 13,364 (80.69%) votes. Of that, 9,474 were on Tuesday, 2,796 during early voting and 1,094 from mail-in ballots.

President Joe Biden won the Democratic primary for reelection in Carroll, with a total of 5,829 (81.20%) votes. Of that, 3,052 were earned Tuesday, 1,230 in early voting and 1,547 were garnered through mail-in ballots.

Baltimore County Executive John “Johnny O” Olszewski Jr. earned the most votes for the Democratic race for the U.S. House of Representatives District 2, which includes Carroll. In the county, he got 4,314 votes, including 2,143 votes on Tuesday, 1,047 votes in early voting and 1,124 in mail-in ballots as of Wednesday.

Kim Klacik, a businesswoman and political commentator, earned the most Carroll Republican votes in the primary for the District 2 congressional seat, with 7,613 votes total in Carroll, including 5,133 on Tuesday. She earned 1,817 in early voting and 663 in mail-in ballots so far.

Olszewski will face Klacik in November’s General Election.

Johnny Olszewski Jr., Sarah Elfreth win Democratic primaries for Baltimore-area congressional seats

State Sen. Sarah Elfreth, who represents District 30, won the Democratic primary for District 3. She got a total of 320 votes in Carroll. That includes 43 in early voting, 218 Tuesday and another 59 in mail-in ballots so far.

Robert J. Steinberger, won the Republican race for District 3, including a total of 371 votes in Carroll. That includes 187 in early voting, 313 on Tuesday and 17 in mail-in ballots.
