NYC schools could lose hundreds of nurses as federal funds expire

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- New York City public schools could lose 400 school nurses next year as federal funds expire, according to a report by Chalkbeat.

The city's Education Department is set to shrink by $808 million in the next fiscal year due to expiring funds, city officials announced. During the COVID pandemic, $65 million in federal funds supported hundreds of contracted nurses to provide care to city schools.

In April, the city announced it will protect $500 million in city and state funding for educational programs. However, the budget allocation didn't include funding for school nurses.

The education budget will be discussed with the City Council during a committee hearing on Wednesday.
