There were high hopes among some for the 2024 Cincinnati Reds.
The front office finally dug into the pocketbook of owner Bob Castellini and spent in free agency, adding the likes of Jeimer Candelario, Nick Martinez, Emilio Pagan, Buck Farmer, Brent Suter, and Frankie Montas. They held tight to their bright young talent, and there was a level of expectation that they’d improve significantly upon a 2023 season in which they flirted with a playoff spot.
As of Wednesday morning, however, the Reds are just 18-24 overall and tied for last place in the National League Central. They’ve gone just 2-11 over their last 13 games, and they’re about to go toe to toe with the powerful Los Angeles Dodgers 7 times in the next week and a half.
What’s that mean for manager David Bell? The owner of just a .468 win percentage in his 5+ seasons at the helm of the Reds, he’s now at the helm of a club finally attempting to compete that, so far, isn’t competing well at all.
Is that purely on the injuries and suspensions, or has his decision-making become the problem?
