Taylor Swift Gets Dragged Into Travis Kelce's Teammate's Misogynistic Commencement Speech

0

Taylor Swift is busy entertaining crowds in Europe with her Eras Tour and the last thing she probably expected was to get dragged into Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs teammate’s Benedictine College commencement speech controversy. NFL kicker Harrison Butker decided it was a great idea to quote one of the pop star’s songs in a misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-reproductive rights speech. Let’s just say, he probably messed with the wrong fanbase

Butker’s 20-minute speech on May 11 addressed the female graduates and pointed out that there have been “diabolical lies told to women” in society and reminded them that their “most important title” is to be a “homemaker.” The athlete didn’t stop there, though, he continued with his thoughts about where women truly belong — in the home. “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” he added. “I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”

It’s important to remember that it should be the woman’s choice to work inside or outside the home — if they can afford it. Butker is speaking from a place of privilege where his family can decide what works best for them. (According to Spotrac, his career earnings total $18,143,979.) He might want to speak with families struggling to pay the bills in a tough economy which forces both parents to hold down jobs.

If that wasn’t enough, Butker decided it was a great time to quote Swift and a lyric from her 2022 single, “Bejeweled.” He even had the audacity to refer to her as his “teammate’s girlfriend.” He told the audience, “As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘Familiarity breeds contempt.’” The Swifties then took action on X, making sure the world knew what they thought of him for using the 34-year-old pop star’s words against everything she believes in. Butker knew exactly what he was doing PR-wise to invoke Swift’s name and work.

“Harrison Butker, I hope you miss every kick this season & you are hereby banished from the Swiftie-Chiefs Kingdom alliance. Disrespecting pride month and my trans friends? Nah bro, we identify YOU and your hateful heart as the problem,” wrote one account.” Another user chimed in, “I’m very excited for the #TaylorSwift diss track about #HarrisonButker ????????????????” And a third fan noted the financial windfall Swift brought to the team. “LOL. The @Chiefs have clearly enjoyed the added brand value TSwift has brought to the team. You know what Swifties typically hate? Homophobia. Misogyny. To be clear: f**k your whole ass team while this man is on it. This isn’t gonna end well for Harrison Butker.”

The Chiefs have yet to comment, but the Swifties are making their voices heard.
