A 2-year-old boy was seriously injured after opening the car door and falling out of the moving vehicle in Clinton on Tuesday.

The child was in the backseat of a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander that was headed north on Sunnybrook Lane around 3:15 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to Connecticut State Police.

As the vehicle went around a left curve in the road, the child opened the rear passenger side door and fell out of the Toyota, state police said.

After the driver stopped the vehicle, the child “came to rest on Sunnybrook Lane in the area of the right rear tire of the Toyota Highlander,” state police said.

Troopers wrote in the crash report that the boy did not have a seatbelt on.

The child was taken to the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital for serious injuries.

The driver, a 55-year-old Clinton woman, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for what state police described as “possible injuries.”

An 11-year-old passenger in the front seat did not report any injuries.

The Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad are investigating the incident.
