'Jeopardy!' Is Getting a New Spinoff Focused on One Topic

0

The Jeopardy! universe has continued to expand in the years after the death of beloved longtime host Alex Trebek in 2020. Recent spinoffs like Celebrity Jeopardy! and Jeopardy! Masters have brought some new and old faces into the game as they answer questions (or rather, give questions to answers) about a variety of topics. Now, another spinoff is set to join the Jeopardy! family, this time with a focus on one specific area.

On May 14, Amazon officials announced the new spinoff series Pop Culture Jeopardy! during the company's upfront presentation. The new show is centered around the world of entertainment and will air on Prime Video, making it the first Jeopardy! spinoff series to be created for a major streaming service.

"Pop Culture Jeopardy! is its own cultural moment, marking the first time the iconic franchise will premiere exclusively on a streaming service," Amazon MGM Studios exec Lauren Anderson said, per Variety. "With a team-based approach and pop-culture focus, our global Prime Video customers will exclusively experience this innovative spin on Jeopardy! while testing their knowledge on topics that both define and transcend generations."

Information on how to apply to be a contestant is forthcoming. The team format is certainly a switch-up from the Jeopardy! we've come to know and love, making it possible for competitors to fill in each others' cultural blind spots.

"Pop Culture Jeopardy! is going to be a nail biter for game show enthusiasts who can expect to see teams competing at the highest level of Jeopardy! combined with a fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind," Sony Pictures Television's president of game shows Suzanne Prete said of the venture. "It’s going to be a must-watch for long-time viewers and new fans alike."

It's not the first subject-based Jeopardy! spinoff to hit the airwaves. Rock & Roll Jeopardy! ran on VH1 from 1998 to 2001 and Sports Jeopardy! aired from 2014 to 2016 on Crackle. For younger folks, there was the children's version Jep! on Game Show Network from 1998 to 2000, the long-running annual Jeopardy! Teen Tournament for middle and high schoolers, and Jeopardy! National College Championship for university students. And for the Jeopardy! veterans, there was 2020's Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time—which was won by Jeopardy! stalwart and current host Ken Jennings—and Jeopardy! Masters. Meanwhile, several Hollywood stars have played the game in the Celebrity Jeopardy! spinoff.
