(KLFY) -- Students in some Acadiana school districts will be relased early today in anticipation of inclement weather, officials said.

As of 1:20 p.m., Calcasieu, Evangeline and Jeff Davis parishes have announced early closures.

In a post announcing the decision to release Evangeline Parish schools early on the schools' Facebook page, Evangeline Parish Superintendent of Schools Darwan Lazard said "The safety of our students and employees remains our top priority."

"In communication with our local 911/Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) and based upon the most recent National Weather Service (NWS) advisory, indicating severe weather conditions with a possibility of unsafe driving conditions for buses and other vehicles, the Evangeline Parish School District, all campuses and district offices, will be close early on 5-13-2024 at 2:00 PM," the post reads.

In Jeff Davis Parish, each school will be sending out specific departure times concerning each school in their district. Times may vary from school to school. They will be sending out this information on the social media platform they normally use, officials said.

Calcasieu Parish School Board will conduct early dismissal, with alternative sites dismissed at 1 p.m. Schools in DeQuincy, Starks, and Vinton will dismiss at 2 p.m. All other CPSB schools will dismiss at 2:30 p.m. Normal dismissal procedures will be followed, and students will be dismissed following normal transportation plans. Extended day programs and all extra-curricular activities are also cancelled for this afternoon.

KLFY meteorologist Chris Cozart said widespread heavy storms become likely after 2 p.m. today and could last through much of this evening. Overall, most of the area could receive 2-4 inches of rainfall with isolated higher amounts.

Lazard said the district is planning to resume regular operations Tuesday.
