Marco Reus’s Illustrious Career in BVB as German Set to Play Final Match

Marco Reus is a German footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder and winger for the club Borussia Dortmund. He joined BVB back in 2012 and has stayed in the club till date. He recently announced the Champions League final will be his last match for the German side. Let us take a look at the career of the legendary midfielder when he donned the Black and Yellow.

Joining Dortmund and Going to the UCL Final

Reus joined Dortmund in 2012 after leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach. Reus cited he wanted to challenge for the league title and the Champions league thus he thought that his boyhood club Dortmund was the place to go. In his first season at Dortmund, Reus led the team to a Champions League final after defeating Real Madrid in the semi final. In the final, Marco Reus was able to get his team a penalty which was successfully converted into a goal by his teammate but they still ended up losing after Bayern Munich scored a late goal thanks to Arjen Robben.

Injuries and Accolades

Over the next couple of seasons, Marco Reus proved to be a key player for the German giants. He has led the team to three DFL Supercups and two DFB Pokal. Over the course of his career for Dortmund, Marco Reus has played 427 matches in which he has scored 169 goals and provided 130 assists. In 2014 Reus was diagnosed with an ankle injury which kept him out of action for a month. He returned to action in October 2014 and made an instant impact scoring a goal and providing an assist. In November, Reus got injured again and had to stretchered off the pitch. This injury kept him out until January 2015. In February of the same year, he signed a contract extension which kept him at the club until 2019.

Reus was again injured which kept him out of action until November 2016. Reus gained back his goalcoring form shortly after scoring important goals for the club in all competitions. In the 2017 DFB Pokal Final, Reus suffered a ligament tear which kept him out of the game for several months. Dortmund went on to win the match and the cup. He returned to play in February 2018 after recovering from the injury. In March of 2018, Reus again extended his contract which kept him at the club until 2023.

Before starting the 2018-2019 season, Marco Reus was made club captain by the new coach. He served as the captain of BVB until 2023 when he decided to step down. In April 2021, Reus became the leading goal scorer for Dortmund in the Champions League after scoring his 18th goal in the competition. Reus continued to perform and signed another extension for a year keeping him at the club until 2024.

End of an Era at Dortmund

On 4th November 2023, Reus played his 400th match for Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich. Dortmund lost that match 4-0 but Reus was praised for his all rounded performance. On May 3, Reus announced that he will not be renewing his contract with Dortmund any further and will leave the club after this season. Marco Reus’s final game in a BVB shirt is going to be on 2nd June 2024 against Real Madrid in the Champions League Final. If Reus and Dortmund win the UCL it would be a perfect fairytale ending as Reus would win his first UCL and that too in his last game for a club he has been a part of for 12 years.
