New Almonte Library opens Wednesday

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The brand new building for the Almonte library location opens this week with some new additions for the community.

"This location is our first one to have a podcasting booth. So we're very excited about that," said Kelly Dexter, the director of communications for the Metropolitan Library System.

Dexter said anyone can take a class to learn how to use the equipment in the podcast room. If you're more on the artsy side, the "makers space" might be up your alley.

"There will be an embroidery machine and there there will be 3D printers, sewing machines, button makers, all this cool stuff for people to come in and use,' said Dexter.

It's a new modern interior, with an exterior complete with art from local artists.

"The outside mural-- there's a a drive up book drop and so the mural is as part of that book drop," said Dexter.

Dexter said the $6.6 million library was paid for through the voter-approved Better Streets, Safer City Bond Issue.

It was designed to cater to the community around that area and there was a lot of input from residents nearby.

"We will have materials in English, Spanish and Vietnamese, which really kind of speaks to the population of that area. You know, that was by design to make sure that they know that there is something for them and it's for everybody," said Dexter.

The location and new building joins the family of 19 libraries across Oklahoma County.

A ribbon cutting is this Wednesday, May 15, at 10am.

The public is invited and the first 1,000 people who get a library card will get a card that shows a photo of one of the murals from a local artist.
