Rays 6, Yankees 10: Siri’s grand slam not enough as Rays drop series at home
The Rays pulled within one in the 7th, but the Yankees pulled away shortly after to win this one.
The Rays entered this Mother’s Day showdown against the Yankees sitting at .500 and looking to cap off a 7-2 home stand. Unfortunately, that would not be the case as the Rays would drop Sunday’s series finale by a score of 10-6 following some late inning fireworks by both offenses.
For a quick recap of the first half of the game:
The Yankees scored one in the first and third, and two runs in the fourth and fifth innings against Rays’ stater Tyler Alexander. Soto delivered in the first with a sacrifice fly. Jahmai Jones hit is first bomb of the year in the third. In the fourth, Trevino hit a two run blast to extend the lead to 4-0. Then, the following inning, Judge hit his 10th homer of the year, driving in Soto to give the Yankees a 6-0 lead.
Alexander would throw seven innings, surrender six runs, walk two, and strike out three.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Rays would load the bases ahead of a Jose Siri grand slam that quickly pulled the Rays within two runs. With only one out the Rays would load the bases again for Isaac Parades. The Rays’ third basemen would be hit by a pitch driving in another run to cut the deficit to just one run. But, Palacio would hit a shallow fly ball and Rosario would ground into an inning ending fielders choice. The Rays would leave them loaded and finished the inning trailing 6-5.
Armstrong would come on to try and hold the hold the score, but the Yankees would have an answer. With one out and runners on second and third, Gleyber Torres launched a three run blast to restore a comfortable four run lead for the Yankees. With two outs, Trevino hit a solo blast off Erasmo and extended the lead to 10-5.
The Rays would go quietly in the bottom half and the Yankees would do the same in the top of the 9th. Down five runs with three outs to work with, the Rays were unable to mount another comeback, but Yandy Diaz did hit another blast to right-center.
The final score would be 10-6 and with the loss the Rays moved to a game under .500 again. They will play at Boston tomorrow with Eflin on the bump.
