SHEFFIELD UNITED have set a new record for the most goals conceded in a Premier League season.

The Blades are set to finish bottom of the league and their relegation was confirmed following defeat to Newcastle at the end of last month.

Chris Wilder’s side have picked up just 16 points from 37 games and have sat bottom for most of the campaign.

And following a 1-0 defeat to Everton they have now conceded a record 101 goals.

That pips the previous record set by Swindon in the 1993-94 campaign, when there were 42 games in a season.

Sheffield United previously broke Derby’s record of 89 goals conceded in a 38-match season by losing 4-2 to Manchester United.

They conceded five or more goals against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Burnley, with Newcastle putting eight past them at Bramall Lane.

The Blades are also the lowest scorers in the division, finding the back of the net just 35 times.

After relegation was confirmed, manager Wilder said: “It stings and it hurts – we’ve not been good enough.

“Sheffield United is a really good football club, I think everyone understands that.

“I’m enthusiastic and committed, along with my coaching staff. We know exactly what direction we need to go, what the culture needs to look like, what pre-season needs to look like.”

To make matters even worse, Sheffield United are set to be deducted two points next season after an independent disciplinary commission ruled they had been in default of transfer payments to other clubs last season.
