Despite paying a huge amount each month for the home, Ness was subject to excessive amounts of mould on her windowsill and a tiny street-level window with iron bars.

She revealed the window wasn’t water-tight adding that the temperatures are ‘baltic’.

After walking down two flights of stairs, which had no carpet laid, she wrote: “pov you’re living in a student house trying to make the most of the basement room nobody wanted which you pay over £700 a month for.”

“Spiders, damp, Baltic temps & steel bars on a 12” road-level window,” were also added the list of horrors in Ness’ room.

Once she got down the stairs she showed off the room, which had poor lighting.

But Ness had managed to decorate it as well as should could and turned it into a relatively cosy space.

The woman also posted a follow-up video showing the state of her windows.

Around the window, the walls were covered in mould and the rust handles were difficult for her to push open, not that there was much point doing so.

As she was in the basement flat the windows were protected with rusty iron bars and lead onto a busy main road with cars and pedestrians.

She revealed she had been lumped with the worst room in the house as she was on a year abroad when her flatmates viewed properties.

Although she attend Durham University, students are expected to rent privately after their first year, so the university had nothing to do with the property.

The video has quickly gone viral on her TikTok account @precarious_sagittarius with over 2 million views and 148k likes.

People were quick to take to the comments horrified by the room and the amount it cost her.

One person wrote: “Not the medieval prison entrance.”

Requirements For Bedrooms

Home Experts at Build Safe say bedroom windows should be 55cm to 110cm from the floor and must have at least 5.7 square feet for the opening.

The window must also be at least 60cm high and 50cm wide. If the opening of the window is less than 4% of the room’s floor area, you will need to include adequate ventilation ducting

Another commented: “It’s giving crypt.”

“I kinda love it! It feels really cosy! Is it atleast warm?,” penned a third.

“Below freezing,” replied Ness.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “I would simply leave.”

“I hope you’re paying less than everyone else!!” claimed a fifth

Someone else added: “This costs more than my two bedroom house with a garden.”
