‘Huge milestone in my life’ – Lucas Moura reflects on his Ajax heroics five years later

0

Lucas Moura has been speaking about his heroics in the Champions League semifinal back in 2019, with the winger admitting that the day was one of the most special ones of his life.

Although the 2019 Champions League campaign eventually ended in disappointment, with Spurs being beaten by Liverpool in the final, the semifinal win over Ajax will live long in the memories of Tottenham fans and it remains one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s history.

The Lilywhites found themselves 2-0 down in the tie and 3-0 down on aggregate at the half-time interval in the second leg in Amsterdam, with the Eredivisie side seemingly having one foot in the final.

However, Tottenham delivered a sensational comeback, with half-time substitute Moura scoring a second-half hattrick to send Spurs to the final in Madrid.

Lucas Moura reflects on that night in Amsterdam

Moura, who departed Spurs at the end of last season to return to Sao Paulo, admitted that the moments after his stoppage-time goals were quite surreal.

The 31-year-old told ESPN Brasil: “We started the second half pressing Ajax more, with a different attitude. Five minutes into the second half, I scored the first goal. After another five minutes, I scored the second. Then I thought: ‘We’ve done the hardest thing, which was equalise. We’ve got another 30 minutes to score just one more goal.’

“It’s amazing. When I scored, it was like the stadium was empty. That silence, just our fans in the corner jumping and celebrating. It was an explosion of feelings. I didn’t even know how to celebrate. I remember jumping and then sliding. You can’t help but get emotional.

“The Champions League is the most coveted competition in the world. That game, as an individual performance, is the most magical game. Every week I get messages on social media talking about that game. When I’m watching the Champions League, I remember that game. It was a huge milestone in my career, in my life.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think a single Spurs fan will ever forget that game in Amsterdam and even though Moura won a few trophies at PSG, it is that performance at the Johan Cruyff Arena that will spring to people’s minds when they think about the Brazilian.
