Speed limit in NYC could drop as low as 10mph in some areas

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City could start implementing special slow zones after a law was passed allowing the city to lower its speed limits.

Sammy's Law passed in the state budget. It's named after 12-year-old Sammy Cohen Eckstein, who was killed in Park Slope by a speeding car while trying to grab a soccer ball in the street in 2013.

The legislation would set a limit of 10 to 15 mph on roads with speed bumps or mini roundabouts, according to reporting from Newsday. Mayor Eric Adams said he supports the idea behind a possible slow zone bill during a news conference held on Wednesday.

The city could start the process of changing the speed limit as early as June 18. Roads outside Manhattan with at least three lanes would stay at 25 miles per hour under the working plan.
