‘I was utterly devastated’ Dancing on Ice pro Alex Murphy says she was fired in five-minute phone call after victory
FORMER Dancing On Ice star Alex Murphy has claimed she was fired from the show with a five-minute phone call.
The professional ice skater won the competition programme with Joe Swash, and just a few months later, took to social media to announce that she’d been axed from the show.
And had done three years on the programme before the 2020 victory[/caption] Then the Covid-19 pandemic brought everything to a halt[/caption]In a video on TikTok, Alex further opened up about finding out the news, and how much it affected her.
She explained that she did Dancing On Ice for three years, with her last year coming a few weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic began.
“Then I got fired from my job on Dancing On Ice, which was miserable,” she said.
“We had literally just won the show and I found out in June of that year with a five minute phone call that I wasn’t going to be asked back.
“And I was absolutely and utterly devastated.”
She was even more concerned about whether or not she’d be able to stay in the UK, as she’d been given a visa so she could work on Dancing On Ice.
However, as she’d met her now husband Paul Klein, and had been encouraged to get into content creation by him, she was able to sign up with a social media agency, who were then able to “get me a visa to stay here, able to stay in the UK, which was very, very fortunate for me”.
Alex then turned her content creation into her full time job, as she admitted she had “no other choice” because “every ice rink was closed” due to the pandemic and she’d been let go from Dancing On Ice.
“My parents were super, super skeptical when I told them I was gonna do this as a job,” she admitted.
“They were, like, really anti it and wanted me to go back to skating.
“But in my defense, they didn’t want me to go to skating either, and that turned out okay!”
Alex and Paul then got engaged, and got married six months after that.
“And hopefully we will start a family soon and that’s in the future for us,” she smiled.
However, Alex did reveal she misses ice skating, as she mused: “I haven’t really skated in like a really long time. I haven’t put my skates on in ages.
“But I do miss it. Miss it when it’s convenient. Like I miss it during the winter and I miss it. I wish I was performing.
“I feel like this kind of gives me a little bit of that performance kick. But I do miss it.
“And I would go back if the right job or the right time or the right opportunity was there.”
