20 April 2024 Historic/ Inland Championship
On the 20th of April at Zwartkops Raceway had a very small entry on the line for Pre-1974 International Sport racing Prototypes. There were several reasons for this. There were some conflicting events like Karting, Red Star Raceway, and an airshow at Wonderboom and a good number of our competitors were offshore. We initially expected 23 entries then this came down to 15 entries, and on race day only 8! Whilst there were many valid reasons for this small grid it was embarrassing to us as promotors before a good crowd of supporters.
Those who did compete put up a good show. Larry Wilford’s big green Lolan and Seef Fourie in the Cougar were as always spectacular. Their lap times were close. Warren Lombard’s in his rebuilt Cobra whilst Hennie Groenewald in the little Escort at 71.5 seconds were very impressive to watch. Allen Meyer got the black Chevron to work again and John Ten surprised himself as it was made by the factory. Jonathan Needham in the Cortina, Hennie Groenewald and James Temple Escorts made up for the Trans-AM Class.
As small as the field was the sight and sound of the cars made up for a good race.
For reasons as given the Legends V8’s and Little Giants also had only a moderate field. From 26 to 21 then in the end 15 on the grid. The race relived the battle between Seef JNR in the Cougar and Ben Morgenrood. The Cougar despite identical lap times could not pass Ben’s Ford Mustang. Whilst this battle raged, Paige Lindenberg was at her best with her Ford Farlane followed by Alan Poulters Volvo.
The U2 class was dominated by Carel Pienaar’s Lotus Cortina followed closely by Roger Housten’s Alfa Guilia. The Little Giants was a case of Darts and Mini Coopers. John Ten lead in the Dart and Terence Botes held the honour amongst the Minis. Djurk Venter in his beautiful Ford Capri made a great statement in the track. The second heat came to a pre-mature end when Andre de Kock blew the black Dart’s engine in turn one.
FUTURE EVENTS – TOP OF THE HILL
As discussed on 3rd April our next event will be on the 6th of July where we will have a Historic Day at Zwartkops Raceway with a hill Climb
TOP OF THE HILL – this is a 2000m hill climb in the anti-clockwise direction. (Details for this event will follow).
MAKE NOTE OF THE DATES
(THIS WILL BE OUR PROLOGUE EVENT FOR OUR NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL EVENT ON THE 5TH OF OCTOBER 2024. MSA LICENCE WILL BE NEEDED. IT WILL BE AN OFFICIAL TIMED EVENT)
24th August & 2nd November – Historic/ Inland Championship
PASSION FOR SPEED 2024
The present format of how we promote the event is losing its momentum. We are planning to restructure the whole event. In the interest of sponsors and competitors, the public and participants.
NOTE: There will be an open practice for top of the hill on Wednesday, 29 May. Those participating must vote first and have a vote mark before signing an indemnity. We will only start at 11am. This is a practice day and will not be a MSA event so no racing licence will be required.
Personal News
We are sad of the passing of Marge Viljoen. She was one of our best interactive supporters from the golden sixties. She knew everything – the cars and the people and still catered for our international competitors up to two years ago.
See you at Zwartkops!
