Ben Hammond, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound point guard from Paul VI Catholic (VA) and Team Takeover, has committed to Virginia Tech, he told ZAGSBLOG.

The three-star guard initially committed to Rhode Island in June of 2023 over College of Charleston, George Mason, Mount St. Mary’s, Fairfield, Towson and Fordham, but recently opted to re-open his recruitment.

“I’ll be going to Virginia Tech,” he said. “Coach [Mike] Young and the rest of the staff have a great belief in my abilities. I wanted to go somewhere that I’m loved and needed and Virginia Tech filled every box. Since first stepping on campus it felt like home and the staff made it feel like a family.

“I’m bringing my ability to make everyone else better on the floor as well scoring when I need to. Also toughness, being a hard-nosed lead guard is what I am and need to bring to the next level at Virginia Tech.”

Hammond played on a loaded PVI team that won the prestigious WCAC championship in February, completing an undefeated league season. Hammond tallied 10 points, 5 assists and 2 steals in the 70-58 win over Gonzaga High School.

He joins three-star Class of 2024 small forward Tyler Johnson and four-star center Ryan Jones in the Hokies’ recruiting class. They are also adding four transfers: point guard Hysier Miller (Temple), shooting guard Rodney Brown (Cal), small forward Ben Burnham (College of Charleston) and power forward Toibu Lawal (VCU).

“Ben brings a championship winner’s mentality to every team he has been on,” PVI coach Glenn Farello said. “He makes his teammates better. He is a dynamic playmaker with terrific vision. His basketball IQ will help him transition and contribute.”
