GANSEVOORT, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A free Narcan training is being held at the Gansevoort Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday, May 9. Naloxone, sold under the brand name Narcan, will also be distributed during the training about opioid overdose.

The Gansevoort Volunteer Fire Department is located at 1870 Route 32N, Gansevoort, NY, the training is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants will learn how to identify an opioid overdose, administer Narcan nasal spray, and learn about the life-saving medication. For people unable to attend the training, a free Narcan rescue kit can be requested online through Saratoga County.

After completing the training, participants will go home with a free Narcan rescue kit that includes two doses of Narcan, a rescue breathing face shield, a certificate of training, a drug disposal system, and educational resource guides on mental health and substance use disorder. Narcan can not only reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, but it's also safe to use when opioids aren't present.

Anyone who administers Narcan should call 911 immediately. New York State's Good Samaritan law allows New Yorkers to contact emergency services without the fear of being arrested if they are experiencing an overdose. The training is in partnership with the Saratoga County Department of Health, the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, the Town of Northumberland, and the Gansevoort Volunteer Fire Department.
