May storm in Marin drops measurable rain

A cold storm from Alaska dropped nearly 2 inches of rain in Marin over the weekend.

San Rafael’s high temperature dropped from 79 degrees on Friday to 58 degrees on Saturday, National Weather Service meteorologist Dalton Behringer said.

Mount Tamalpais received 1.88 inches, Point Reyes Station, 1.55 inches, and Novato, 0.94 inches of rain, the weather service reported.

“If you compare it to a storm in January, it was pretty run of the mill, but for May, it was a little abnormal,” Behringer said.

Significant snow fell in the Sierra Nevada on Sunday. The University of California’s Central Sierra Snow Lab, near Donner Summit, reported 26.4 inches of snowfall. That total made it the snowiest day of the 2023-24 season, beating March 3 by 2.6 inches.

Warm and dry weather is forecast for Marin this week. Behringer said that most Marin residents will experience temperatures in the 60s along the coast. Inland temperatures are expected to reach the mid to upper 70s.
