Air crew rescues 4 from Tomales Bay
Four people were rescued after their boat overturned in Tomales Bay.
No one was hurt in the incident, reported around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
A victim called 911 from her cellphone near Marshall, said Deputy Larry Matelli, a tactical flight officer with the Sonoma County sheriff’s helicopter crew Henry-1, which performed the rescue.
“Even though they all ended up in the water, the phone still worked,” he said.
The pilot did not know what caused the boat to overturn.
The crew happened to be performing demonstrations at the Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival when they were alerted, Matelli said.
The team conducted a long-line rescue to remove the victims from the water and transport them to shore, where Marin County firefighters treated them for exposure.
Matelli credited the victims for wearing life vests.
“The big thing was it could have been a different outcome if it wasn’t for their life vests,” he said.
