New Superman photo: James Gunn shares first image of David Corenswet in costume as the Man of Steel
It’s Superman!
On Monday, “Superman” writer-director James Gunn released the first look at star David Corenswet as Superman in an Instagram post.
The photo depicts the Man of Steel sitting in what appears to be a luxury highrise condo in his iconic blue, red, and yellow costume. He’s pulling on his boots, presumably to deal with the pink-and-blue comet-like burst that’s visible in the sky out the window. He may be a nearly immortal superhero from the planet Krypton, but he puts his boots on one at a time like everyone else.
“Superman” will be Gunn’s first DC directorial effort since becoming the studio’s co-CEO in 2022. (He previously made “The Suicide Squad” and TV spinoff “Peacemaker,” and directed three “Guardians of the Galaxy” films for Marvel). The film will kick off a new DC extended universe.
Last year, producer and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran described the film as “not an origin story,” but rather the story of “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned.”
Corenswet has been rising in Hollywood for a few years, and this is his most prominent role by far. He has appeared in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix shows “Hollywood” and “The Politician,” David Simon’s Baltimore crime limited series “We Own This City,” the Netflix romantic comedy “Look Both Ways,” and the cult hit A24 horror movie “Pearl.” As The Hollywood Reporter notes, he is just the fourth actor to play Superman on the big screen, after Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill.
In addition to Corenswet, “Superman” features “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan as Clark Kent’s lover Lois Lane and “Renfield” star Nicholas Hoult as Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor, along with Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.
“Superman” flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
