I’m a landscaping pro and I’m always surprised people don’t know an important step to take with their lawns twice a year
WHEN you’re in the landscaping business, some good lawn care practices just seem obvious.
But one pro in southern Georgia said he’s surprised so many people don’t know about a key step to keep their grass lush.
Benjamin Janeway owns the punnily-named Kiss My Grass Landscaping on the outskirts of Valdosta, Georgia.
In his work, he’s learned that there’s an important chore homeowners shouldn’t miss — but often do.
“I’m surprised that people do not know that you should fertilize your lawn twice a year,” he told The U.S. Sun.
“You fertilize your crops so that they are bigger and more productive, you should do the same with your lawn.
“You can do this every six months by purchasing what is called ‘weed and feed.'”
He recommended using a broadcast spreader to spread it around your lawn.
TOOL TIME
Janeway has plenty of other tools he swears by, but one more sticks out in his mind.
“If I had to choose one I would say you should buy a ‘blade lock,’ he advised.
“It is a peculiar tool, but when it comes time to change the blades on your lawnmower, you will be thankful you have it!
“It locks the blades in place so that you can get them off. It is not that expensive, but worth every penny!”
BYE-BYE, BALDIE
A good mow will keep your lawn looking level, neat, and healthy, but it won’t do much if there’s a stubborn spot that refuses to grow.
For that, Janeway says to use see and straw.
But if you need things to move a bit quicker, he’s got a speedier fix in his back pocket.
“[If] you need immediate results … you should cut a square patch and lay down some sod,” he said.
DON’T SKIM ON MAINTENANCE
Finally, Janeway urged homeowners not to forget about the basics.
Unless it rains and the sky waters your grass for you, stick to a steady schedule for moisture.
“Be sure to water your lawn two times a day, three days a week, at dawn and at dusk,” he said.
