Santa Don’t Wear Glasses

Splice Today

A long time ago, I was tickled to dress up as Santa Claus—the first and only occasion—and was given plenty of stuffing to fill out my thin frame. It was a mid-December morning in Baltimore’s Harborplace at the Inner Harbor—before that once-prosperous James Rouse project went to the dogs—and I was one of the local “celebrities” (as co-proprietor of the City Paper) to spend half an hour in a small booth greeting young kids and their parents (or babysitters) and listening to gift requests, some modest, others kind of on the greedy side. Crimes and Manslaughter

Splice Today

Twenty-one years ago, I saw Mystic River at the Charles here in Baltimore. It was in theater 4 or 5, and was packed like just about every matinee until the 2020s; besides the bracing set piece where Sean Penn discovers that his daughter has been killed, what struck me that day was the atmosphere in the theater—the same feeling that appeared later during screenings of, for example, Syriana, Milk, Fahrenheit 9/11, Spotlight, Goodnight and Good Luck, Shattered Glass, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. New York’s Christmas Streets

Splice Today

Although he’s a ubiquitous figure from mid-November until December 26th, little’s known of the daily existence of Santa Claus, who brings toys to good children every Christmas Eve by dragging his bulk, accompanied by sacks full of trinkets, down chimneys, even in homes that have no chimneys. We know that his mode of transport will please environmentalists as no oil had to be fracked out of the earth’s mantle to power his chosen mode of transport; instead, he employs eight, sometimes nine, reindeer, beasts found in northern Scandinavia.
