Freshwater jellyfish sightings rise in Canadian lakes

Phys.org

As a lake researcher, I have in recent years had quite a few people ask me whether jellyfish really do live in lakes. Some people think they are seeing things, or that their friends or family are. I've even heard of marital spats over the issue. So, are jellyfish present in Canadian freshwater lakes or not?

Warhol artwork featuring Queen Margrethe stolen from museum

The Copenhagen Post online

A silk screen of Queen Margrethe has been stolen from a gallery in the Netherlands, along with another piece by Andy Warhol, as reported by Dutch media outlet NOS. The Economics of Prepping

Ludwig von Mises Institute

While people who “prep” for disaster (called preppers) are ridiculed by political elites and their media, their actions are perfectly rational. In this article, economist Mark Thornton explains why prepping for natural disasters makes economic sense.

Lechuza House / ARKITITO Arquitetura

Archdaily.com

In order to be closer to their granddaughters, the conception for this house in São Paulo's capital arises from the couple's decision to change their address, having previously resided in the countryside of the state. The wife, a landscape architect, and the husband, an engineer with ties to Mexico, where he spent part of his childhood, aimed to recreate the serenity of their old home, incorporating elements of traditional Mexican architecture into the new residence as a way to evoke nostalgic memories. Use of dislodgeable foliar residue studies for the evaluation of isomerization potential of active substances for non-dietary risk assessment

Plos.org

by Silke Wagner, Christian J. Kuster

When assessing the non-dietary risks for operators, workers, bystanders and residents to active substances in plant protection products (PPPs) that contain stereoisomers, the EFSA guidance on stereoisomers recommends the application of uncertainty factors when the initial ratio of stereoisomers undergoes a significant stereoisomeric excess change of more than 10%. This precautionary approach may be over-conservative in cases where the change in isomers... Читать дальше...

Unsupervised learning for real-time and continuous gait phase detection

Plos.org

by Dollaporn Anopas, Yodchanan Wongsawat, Jetsada Arnin

Individuals with lower limb impairment after a stroke or spinal cord injury require rehabilitation, but traditional methods can be challenging for both patients and therapists. Robotic systems have been developed to help; however, they currently cannot detect the continuous gait phase in real time, hindering their effectiveness. To address this limitation, researchers have attempted to develop gait phase detection in general using fuzzy logic algorithms and neural networks. Читать дальше...

An arithmetic operation P system based on symmetric ternary system

Plos.org

by Hai Nan, Jie Zhang, Ping Guo, Jiqiao Jiang, Xu Zhang

Nowadays, electronic computers use a “binary” numbering system, as opposed to “ternary” logic, which is closer to the way the human brain thinks. In this paper, the symmetric ternary system is applied to membrane computing for the first time. By combining the symmetric ternary system with membrane computing, this paper provides a more suitable arithmetic operation method for bio-computers, which breaks through the limitations of the traditional binary system in complex operations... Insights from qualitative and bifurcation analysis of COVID-19 vaccination model in Bangladesh

Plos.org

by Md Abdul Kuddus, M. Mohiuddin, Anip Kumar Paul, Azizur Rahman

The unprecedented global impact of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has necessitated a comprehensive understanding of its transmission dynamics and control measures. In this study, we present a detailed analysis of a COVID-19 vaccination model tailored to the context of Bangladesh, incorporating dual-dose vaccination strategies. By employing qualitative and bifurcation analysis techniques, we investigate the equilibrium points... Читать дальше...

Effects of Tai Chi on anxiety and theta oscillation power in college students during the COVID-19 pandemic: A randomized controlled trial

Plos.org

by Min Wang, Shuxun Chi, Xingze Wang, Tongling Wang

Background

College students, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, face substantial psychological stress. This study investigates the impact of Tai Chi (TC) practice on anxiety levels and theta oscillatory power activation characteristics among college students, aiming to provide empirical evidence for their psychological well-being.

Methods

In this randomized controlled trial with 45 healthy college students, brainwave activity and changes in anxiety levels were measured. Читать дальше...

Phenological responses of corn to agricultural mechanization: Evidence from a wheat-corn double cropping system in China

Plos.org

by Teng Wang, Fujin Yi, Huilin Liu

The development of multi-cropping systems is hampered by the seasonal shortage problem of growing two or three crops within a year. Exploring strategies to alleviate phenological constraints in multi-cropping systems is crucial for increasing grain production. Using a county-level panel dataset with detailed crop progress information from China, this study investigates whether mechanized winter wheat harvest can alleviate the phenological constraints of... Associations between obstructive sleep apnea risk and urinary incontinence: Insights from a nationally representative survey

Plos.org

by Bo Li, Feng Li, Xi Xie, Chenhui Xiang, Meilin Li

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and urinary incontinence (UI) are two prevalent health conditions with significant impacts on individuals’ quality of life. Although they appear distinct in nature, a growing body of evidence suggests a potential interrelationship between these conditions. Our objective was to explore the association between the risk of OSA and the occurrence of UI within a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. Utilizing... Читать дальше...

Push and pull factors influencing preference for traditional healing by jaundiced patients in Bangladesh

Plos.org

by Md. Ismail Gazi, Hema Binte Hamid, A. B. M. Alauddin Chowdhury

Background

Jaundice is a significant health issue in Bangladesh. Many patients choose traditional medicine (TM) over conventional medicine (CM) for treating jaundice. This study aimed to identify and analyze the push and pull factors influencing the preferences of jaundiced patients for traditional healing methods in Bangladesh.

Methods

This cross-sectional study used a mixed-methods approach. Two focus group discussions... Читать дальше...
