A computational model for bacteriophage ϕX174 gene expression

Plos.org

by Alexis M. Hill, Tanvi A. Ingle, Claus O. Wilke

Bacteriophage ϕX174 has been widely used as a model organism to study fundamental processes in molecular biology. However, several aspects of ϕX174 gene regulation are not fully resolved. Here we construct a computational model for ϕX174 and use the model to study gene regulation during the phage infection cycle. We estimate the relative strengths of transcription regulatory elements (promoters and terminators) by fitting the model to transcriptomics data. Читать дальше...

Elucidating the roles of SOD3 correlated genes and reactive oxygen species in rare human diseases using a bioinformatic-ontology approach

Plos.org

by Mark Stanworth, Shu-Dong Zhang

Superoxide Dismutase 3 (SOD3) scavenges extracellular superoxide giving a hydrogen peroxide metabolite. Both Reactive Oxygen Species diffuse through aquaporins causing oxidative stress and biomolecular damage. SOD3 is differentially expressed in cancer and this research utilises Gene Expression Omnibus data series GSE2109 with 2,158 cancer samples. Genome-wide expression correlation analysis was conducted with SOD3 as the seed gene. Categorical SOD3 Pearson... Читать дальше...

A Computational Framework for Understanding the Impact of Prior Experiences on Pain Perception and Neuropathic Pain

Plos.org

by Malin Ramne, Jon Sensinger

Pain perception is influenced not only by sensory input from afferent neurons but also by cognitive factors such as prior expectations. It has been suggested that overly precise priors may be a key contributing factor to chronic pain states such as neuropathic pain. However, it remains an open question how overly precise priors in favor of pain might arise. Here, we first verify that a Bayesian approach can describe how statistical integration of prior expectations... Читать дальше...

Microglia cannibalism during neurodevelopment results in necroptotic cell death

Plos.org

by F. Chris Bennett, Mariko L. Bennett

Clearance of dying neurons by microglia is critical to healthy neurodevelopment, but what else do microglia eat? A new study in PLOS Biology demonstrates that microglia not only eat neurons but each other, and that this “microglia cannibalism” causes necroptotic cell death. During brain development, neurons are selectively cleared by microglia to sculpt neural circuits. This primer discusses a recent study in PLOS Biology showing that microglia also clear away debris from other microglia... Читать дальше...
