Soft demand in China and slowing U.S. growth impacted exports. Japan ran a trade deficit of 294.3 billion yen for September.
Japan rejects China's claims to the islands, which Tokyo calls the Senkaku and Beijing, calls the Diaoyu. Over the past few months the two countries have had a number of confrontations in the waters around it.
