Immunocyte phenotype and breast cancer risk: A Mendel randomization analysis

Plos.org

by Bolin Li, Xinmeng Li, Jialing Liu, Yuanhe Gao, Yan Li

Background

Breast cancer remains a significant global health challenge. Understanding its etiological factors, particularly the role of immune system components, is crucial. This study leverages Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal relationship between various immune cell features and the risk of developing breast cancer.

Methods

Utilizing two-sample MR analysis, we examined 731 immune cell features across... Читать дальше...

FinTech regulation and banks’ risk-taking: Evidence from China

Plos.org

by Zhenlun Wu, Lisha Li, Bo Wang, Xiaomei Zhang

By utilizing China’s 2016 Implementation Plan for the Specific Rectification of Internet Financial Risks as an exogenous shock, we employ a difference-in-differences identification strategy to investigate the impact of FinTech regulation on banks’ risk-taking. Our findings indicate that FinTech regulation strengthens banks’ deposit franchises and funding liquidity. As reliable and interest-rate-insensitive funding sources, higher deposit franchises weaken banks’ incentives for risk-taking.

Experiences and perceptions of patients with ankylosing spondylitis: A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies

Plos.org

by Yu Li, Dongchi Ma, Lili Yang

Objectives

The systematic evaluation of relevant qualitative studies on the experiences of patients with ankylosing spondylitis provides a foundation for the clinical development of personalized disease management programs for this patient category.

Methods

Multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Scopus, CNKI, Wanfang, CBM, and VIP, were searched for qualitative research literature on the experiences... Читать дальше...

Establishment of a tumor-associated fibroblast associated gene score based on scRNA-seq to predict prognosis in patients with triple-negative breast cancer

Plos.org

by Hao Yu, Ziqi Peng, Xing Li, Yiqi Zhang

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is emerging as a tool for the development of improved patient prognosis and the development of novel antitumor drugs. As the most important stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment, cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play an important role in the development of TNBC. The rise of single-cell sequencing technology has facilitated our study of the various cell types in TME. In this study, we interpreted the heterogeneity... Читать дальше...

The influence of palm fiber reinforcement on the cement content of vegetated concrete substrate under the condition of equal strength

Plos.org

by Xiaole Huang, Xue An, Gang Zeng, Shiyuan Xiong, Xiaojun Sun

Vegetated concrete substrate (VCS) is a kind of ecological cemented soil, which has very wide application prospect in high and steep rock slope eco-protection. Cement is an important component of VCS, but it has high energy consumption and environmental pollution. Fiber reinforcement plays an positive role in improving the mechanical properties of soil, and its use as a substitute for cement content in VCS under the condition of equal strength is rarely investigated. Detection and molecular typing of epidemic Brucella strains among camels, sheep, and cattle in Xinjiang, China

Plos.org

by Liu Xingxing, Guangzhen Shi, Lidan Li, Rui Zhang, Jun Qiao

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that can result in symptoms including infertility, abortion, testicular inflammation, and arthritis in affected sheep and cattle. The disease can spread through a range of mechanisms, making outbreaks difficult to control such that affected farms often suffer severe economic losses. In addition, humans can be affected by brucellosis, and the number of cases continues to rise annually. As rates of brucellosis in Xinjiang... Читать дальше...

Aging by autodigestion

Plos.org

by Frank A. DeLano, Geert W. Schmid-Schönbein

The mechanism that triggers the progressive dysregulation of cell functions, inflammation, and breakdown of tissues during aging is currently unknown. We propose here a previously unknown mechanism due to tissue autodigestion by the digestive enzymes. After synthesis in the pancreas, these powerful enzymes are activated and transported inside the lumen of the small intestine to which they are compartmentalized by the mucin/epithelial barrier.... Assessment of autostereoscopic perception using artificial intelligence-enhanced face tracking technology

Plos.org

by Bo Yu, Lu Liu, Ning Yang, Lingzhi Zhao, Huang Wu

Purpose

Stereopsis, the ability of humans to perceive depth through distinct visual stimuli in each eye, is foundational to autostereoscopic technology in computing. However, ensuring stable head position during assessments has been challenging. This study evaluated the utility of artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced face tracking technology in overcoming this challenge by ensuring that each eye consistently receives its intended image. A cross-sectional study of the relationship between daily social contact features and the prevalence of common mental disorders in Taiwan, 2000–2015

Plos.org

by Meng-Han Tsai, Yun-Hsuan Wu, Sih-Jie Lai, Yun-Chieh Yang

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of daily contact features on the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMDs) in Taiwan from 2000 to 2015. Data from the Taiwan Social Change Survey for 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 were used to examine the relationship between the number and level of familiarity with daily social contacts with the probable CMDs (determined by score of ≥ 3 on a 12-item Chinese Health Questionnaire). Investigation of stress in dogs during an MRI examination in response to hearing protection

Plos.org

by Maike Schroers, Y. Zablotski, Andrea Meyer-Lindenberg

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the wearing of hearing protection has a positive influence on stress levels during an MRI examination in dogs under anaesthesia. To this end, the stress hormones cortisol and arginine vasopressin (AVP) were measured in the saliva of patients wearing hearing protection during an MRI scan, as well as in the control group without hearing protection, before and after the scan. Building non-motorized accessible communities for heterogeneous demand: A facility location and network design problem

Plos.org

by Stefano Starita, Pinnaree Tea-Makorn, Pavitra Jindahra

Improving non-motorized accessibility is essential to enable access to vital services such as education and healthcare. Road networks are often inadequately designed for non-motorized accessibility, and service facilities are not always strategically located to reach the majority of users. Furthermore, design decisions are rarely made with consideration for the diverse needs and walking abilities of a heterogeneous population. Enhancing... Читать дальше...
