WTO Agreement on Government Procurement, an inspiration for the WTO as a whole — DG

Opening an event on 9 October marking 10 years since the entry into force of the Agreement on Government Procurement (2012), Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said: “The GPA 2012 introduces trade as a booster for public procurement systems. … It fosters greater transparency and accountability in procurement systems and is as much a good governance agreement as it is about market access.” The chair of the Committee on Government Procurement, Martin Zbinden, presided over the event.

Government procurement committee approves best practices regarding SMEs, welcomes observer

At a meeting of the Committee on Government Procurement on 9 October, parties to the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA) approved a compilation of best practices aimed at supporting the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in government procurement opportunities. Parties also welcomed Timor-Leste’s first participation in the Committee as an observer and the progress made in the negotiation processes of Costa Rica and Albania.

DDG Hill highlights benefits of re-globalization for resilient, inclusive global economy

Speaking at a panel on the challenges regarding international economic integration on 8 October, WTO Deputy Director-General Johanna Hill emphasized that including more regions and communities in supply chains could boost global resilience and promote inclusive growth. She also underscored the role a strong rules-based multilateral trading system can play in this process. DDG Hill was participating in the Global Trade and Supply Chain Summit, taking place in Dubai on 8 and 9 October.

US gives USD 600,000 to strengthen trade expertise in developing economies and LDCs

The United States is contributing USD 600,000 (approximately CHF 505,000) in 2024 to the WTO’s Global Trust Fund to finance training programmes aimed at enhancing the skills of government officials from developing economies and least-developed countries (LDCs). Since 2002, the United States has donated over CHF 29 million to the Global Trust Fund and the Standards and Trade Development Facility.

Ecuador formally accepts Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies

Ecuador deposited its instrument of acceptance of the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies on 9 October. Ambassador José Valencia presented Ecuador’s instrument of acceptance to Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
