Mendelian randomization analysis reveals causal association of anthropometric measures on sepsis risk and mortality

Plos.org

by Chu-Yun Liu, Yu-Shen Yang, Meng-Qin Pei, He-fan He

The objective of this study was to explore the potential causalities of fat mass, nonfat mass and height (henceforth, ‘anthropometric measures’) with sepsis risk and mortality. We conducted the Mendelian randomization (MR) investigation using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of anthropometric measures, sepsis, and sepsis mortality. The GWAS summary data from the UK Biobank was used. Firstly, MR analysis was performed... Читать дальше...

“It’s just getting the word out there”: Self-disclosure by people with young-onset dementia

Plos.org

by Gianna Kohl, Wei Qi Koh, Katrina Scior, Georgina Charlesworth

Background

Sharing a dementia diagnosis with others is a prerequisite to accessing important support for social, cognitive, and physical activity. However, due to the stigma associated with dementia, individuals may be hesitant to disclose their diagnosis. Despite the importance of this issue, there is limited research on personal experiences with sharing one’s diagnosis. This study explored how people with young-onset dementia disclose their diagnosis to other people... Читать дальше...

Perception of urban green space among university students in Bangladesh

Plos.org

by Bijoya Saha, Shah Md Atiqul Haq

Public parks and other green areas are crucial components of urban development. Urban management in emerging countries such as Bangladesh faces major challenges, especially because of the socio-environmental impacts of urbanization. Urban management initiatives in developing countries sometimes neglect crucial services for university students, such as study environments and recreational facilities. This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of... Читать дальше...

Statistical inference of entropy functions of generalized inverse exponential model under progressive type-II censoring test

Plos.org

by Qin Gong, Bin Yin

This article explores the estimation of Shannon entropy and Rényi entropy based on the generalized inverse exponential distribution under the condition of stepwise Type II truncated samples. Firstly, we analyze the maximum likelihood estimation and interval estimation of Shannon entropy and Rényi entropy for the generalized inverse exponential distribution. In this process, we use the bootstrap method to construct confidence intervals for Shannon entropy and Rényi entropy. Читать дальше...

Short-term power load forecasting in China: A Bi-SATCN neural network model based on VMD-SE

Plos.org

by Yuan Huang, Qimeng Feng, Feilong Han

This study focuses on improving short-term power load forecasting, a critical aspect of power system planning, control, and operation, especially within the context of China’s "dual-carbon" policy. The integration of renewable energy under this policy has introduced complexities such as nonlinearity and instability. To enhance forecasting accuracy, the VMD-SE-BiSATCN prediction model is proposed. This model improves computational efficiency and reduces... Читать дальше...

Differential expression of ST6GALNAC1 and ST6GALNAC2 and their clinical relevance to colorectal cancer progression

Plos.org

by Mohammed Saqif Ahmad, Maria Braoudaki, Shoib Sarwar Siddiqui

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has become a significant global health concern and ranks among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Due to its malignant nature, current immunotherapeutic treatments are used to tackle this issue. However, not all patients respond positively to treatment, thereby limiting clinical effectiveness and requiring the identification of novel therapeutic targets to optimise current strategies. Hemp regulates the fitness of corn earworm (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) and its tachinid (Diptera) parasitoids

Plos.org

by Armando Falcon-Brindis, Raul T. Villanueva

Pest management on hemp is still in its infancy, and biological control options are limited. Helicoverpa zea (corn earworm) is one of the key pests of hemp cultivated outdoors, especially on cultivars grown for cannabinoids and grain. In a three-year study, we assessed the effect of diet on the performance of H. zea and its tachinid parasitoids. Parasitized (bearing fly eggs) and unparasitized (without eggs) H. zea larvae were fed on hemp flowers or an artificial diet. Читать дальше...

The impact of port green competitiveness on the hinterland economy: A case study of China

Plos.org

by Yajing Li, Ming Yin, Jiawei Ge

In the global trade landscape, ports are not only critical nodes for the transportation of goods but also increasingly recognized as key factors driving sustainable development through their green competitiveness. This paper takes a green competitiveness perspective to delve into the interactive relationship between port development and the hinterland economy, aiming to provide a theoretical foundation and policy recommendations for the green development of ports. Diabetes prediction model based on GA-XGBoost and stacking ensemble algorithm

Plos.org

by Wenguang Li, Yan Peng, Ke Peng

Diabetes, as an incurable lifelong chronic disease, has profound and far-reaching effects on patients. Given this, early intervention is particularly crucial, as it can not only significantly improve the prognosis of patients but also provide valuable reference information for clinical treatment. This study selected the BRFSS (Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System) dataset, which is publicly available on the Kaggle platform, as the research object, aiming... Читать дальше...

The role of family conflict and cohesion in adolescents’ social responsibility: Emotion regulation ability as a mediator

Plos.org

by Wing Yee Cheng, Rebecca Y. M. Cheung, Kevin Kien Hoa Chung

The social context is crucial for the adolescent development of self-regulatory skills and social responsibility. To understand the role of social context in adolescent development, the present study examined family predictors (i.e., family cohesion and conflict) of social responsibility, with emotion regulation ability as a mediating process. A total of 828 Chinese adolescents (35.6% female; mean age = 13.92 years, SD = 1.34) were recruited from major Chinese cities... Читать дальше...

Decomposing decision-making in preschoolers: Making decisions under ambiguity versus risk

Plos.org

by Nancy Garon, Ellen Doucet, Bronwyn Inness

Decision-making in the real world involves multiple abilities. The main goal of the current study was to examine the abilities underlying the Preschool Gambling task (PGT), a preschool variant of the Iowa Gambling task (IGT), in the context of an integrative decision-making framework. Preschoolers (n = 144) were given the PGT along with four novel decision-making tasks assessing either decision-making under ambiguity or decision-making under risk. Читать дальше...

Association of visceral adiposity index and lipid accumulation products with prediabetes in US adults from NHANES 2007–2020: A cross-sectional study

Plos.org

by Li-Ting Qiu, Ji-Dong Zhang, Bo-Yan Fan, Ling Li, Gui-Xiang Sun

Background

The lipid accumulation product (LAP) and the visceral adiposity index (VAI) are suggested as dependable measures for assessing visceral fat levels. Prediabetes is recognized as a condition that precedes the potential onset of diabetes. The objective of this research is to investigate how VAI and LAP are related to prediabetes among the adult population in the United States.

Methods

Information from the 2007–2020... Читать дальше...
