APOL1 Variant and Kidney Disease—Reply

Jamanetwork.com

In Reply We thank Dr Hilliard for her thoughtful comments regarding our Insights on APOL1-mediated kidney disease. Her hypothesis is that G1 and G2 variants of APOL1 are highly sodium-retentive and thus benefited the West African individuals who lived in the interior of the continent where salt was less abundant, leading to low sodium consumption (200 mg/d). According to this thesis, the descendants of these interior West African individuals who now live on the US diet of high sodium (3400-5000 mg/d)... Читать дальше...

APOL1 Variant and Kidney Disease

Jamanetwork.com

To the Editor The authors of “APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease” have provided an invaluable road map for identifying the link between the G1 and G2 APOL1 variants and high risk of “hypertension-attributed ESKD, lupus nephritis–attributed ESKD, FSGS, and HIV-associated nephropathy” in Black individuals. While the authors have identified the function of these gene variants as an immune response to trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), there is a critical missing piece to this puzzle. The G1 and G2 APOL1 variants are also highly sodium retentive.

Imagery, Poetry, and Seeing Medicine

Sisa describes mentorship as a “successful strategy” and identifies... Читать дальше...

Residency Match for Applicants With Disability

Jamanetwork.com

To the Editor Studying medicine and becoming a physician are complex tasks and are more difficult when done in a low- and middle-income country and when having a physical disability. Even in the United States, less than 1% of medical students have a disability, despite the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. In their Research Letter, Ms Nguyen and colleagues suggested that future studies regarding applicants with disability may... Читать дальше...
