New data from Freddie Mac shows average mortgage rates for 30-year terms sliding closer to 6.00% as of Friday, September 20, 2024, rounding out a week in which the Federal Reserve announced a long-awaited cut to interest rates by 50 basis points — the first cut in more than four years. Rates have been steadily declining for weeks before the Fed's announcement, and it's expected they will continue trending down through the end of the year.
