The skin I live in: Pathogenesis of white-nose syndrome of bats

Plos.org

by Marcos Isidoro-Ayza, Jeffrey M. Lorch, Bruce S. Klein

The emergence of white-nose syndrome (WNS) in North America has resulted in mass mortalities of hibernating bats and total extirpation of local populations. The need to mitigate this disease has stirred a significant body of research to understand its pathogenesis. Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the causative agent of WNS, is a psychrophilic (cold-loving) fungus that resides within the class Leotiomycetes, which contains mainly plant... Читать дальше...

Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) can overcome the cost of antibiotic resistance and may threaten vancomycin’s clinical durability

Plos.org

by Samuel E. Blechman, Erik S. Wright

Vancomycin has proven remarkably durable to resistance evolution by Staphylococcus aureus despite widespread treatment with vancomycin in the clinic. Only 16 cases of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) have been documented in the United States. It is thought that the failure of VRSA to spread is partly due to the fitness cost imposed by the vanA operon, which is the only known means of high-level resistance. Here, we show that the fitness cost of vanA-mediated... Читать дальше...

Relocating healthcare from expensive institutions to sites closer to patients’ homes is an important part of this. This relocation... Читать дальше...

Physiological effects of filtering facepiece respirators based on age and exercise intensity

Plos.org

by Sulbee Go, Yeram Yang, Suhong Park, Hyo Youl Moon, Chungsik Yoon

During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs) were highly effective, but concerns arose regarding their physiological effects across different age groups. This study evaluated these effects based on age and exercise intensity in 28 participants (children, young adults, and older individuals). Physiological parameters such as respiratory frequency (Rf), minute ventilation (VE), carbon dioxide production (VCO2)... Читать дальше...

Correlations between Achilles tendon moment arm and plantarflexor muscle architecture variables

Plos.org

by Logan Faux-Dugan, Stephen J. Piazza

The production of triceps surae plantarflexion moment is complex in that the Achilles tendon moment arm affects the Achilles tendon force by determining the muscle length change and shortening velocity during ankle rotation. In addition, there is evidence for associations between the sizes of muscles and their moment arm at the joints they span. These relationships between muscle architecture and tendon moment arm ultimately affect the muscle’s force... Читать дальше...

Plos.org

by Muhammad Hashim, Lateef Ahmad, Amjad Khan, Muhammad Faheem

Levosulpiride and omeprazole are co-prescribed for gastrointestinal disorders associated with depression and anxiety. Objective of the study was to develop a sensitive, robust and simple method for simultaneous analysis of levosulpiride and omeprazole in human plasma and applicability of the method in determination of pharmacokinetics drug-drug interaction. In the presented study, a reversed-phase HPLC-UV method was developed for... Читать дальше...

Exchange rate pass-through for European Union countries

Plos.org

by Duc Hong Vo, Nam Thanh Vu

Exchange rate pass-through (ERPT) represents a degree to which changes in nominal exchange rates are transmitted into domestic prices. European Union (EU) countries have experienced the unprecedented inflationary pressure due to high geopolitical risk events. As such, understanding the ERPT plays a crucial role. This study provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of ERPT to import prices for 16 EU countries from January 2006 to December 2022. Using the... Читать дальше...
