More than 4 out of every 10 adults aged 65 years or older reported using 5 or more prescription medications in the past 30 days between 2017 and 2020, according to an analysis of cross-sectional survey data from about 14 900 participants. Only about 24% of older people between 1999 and 2000 said they had used 5 or more medications during the past month, which the researchers defined as polypharmacy.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved donanemab, a monoclonal antibody to treat Alzheimer disease in its early stages. Marketed by Eli Lilly as Kisunla, the drug is the second to receive the FDA’s go-ahead for slowing Alzheimer disease, after lecanemab. Like lecanemab, donanemab is designed to clear amyloid plaque in people with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia.
In 2023, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine for people aged 60 years or older after they’d talked over the decision with their physician. Recently, the agency announced it is updating those guidelines for older adults. Now, people aged 75 years or older should receive a single dose of the RSV vaccine along with adults aged 60 years to 74 years who live in nursing homes or have chronic medical conditions including lung or heart disease.
