Modeling the relationship between maternal health and infant behavioral characteristics based on machine learning

Plos.org

by Zhiwen Yang, Xinyi Guo, Xuanzhi Chen, Jianfei Huang

This study investigates the impact of maternal health on infant development by developing a mathematical model that delineates the relationship between maternal health indicators and infant behavioral characteristics and sleep quality. The main contributions of this study are as follows: (1) The use of Spearman’s correlation coefficient to conduct correlation analysis and explore the main factors that influence infant behavioral characteristics based on maternal indicators. Childhood family socioeconomic status is linked to adult brain electrophysiology

Plos.org

by Elif Isbell, Nancy E. Rodas De León, Dylan M. Richardson

A large body of research has linked childhood family socioeconomic status (SES) to neurodevelopment in childhood and adolescence. However, it remains unclear to what extent childhood family SES relates to brain functioning in adulthood. To address this gap, the present study investigated the associations between retrospective accounts of objective and subjective childhood family SES and two well-established electrophysiological indices... Research on the expansion, shrinkage properties and fracture evolution of red clay stabilised with phosphogypsum under dry-wet cycles

Plos.org

by Jinxiong Chen, Kaisheng Chen, Zeyu Liu

In view of the special engineering properties of red clay and the waste of phosphogypsum resources, the expansion and contraction deformation and fissure evolution of phosphogypsum stabilized red clay under different conditions were investigated by laboratory tests and image processing system. The research results show that: (1) the absolute expansion and absolute shrinkage of phosphogypsum stabilized red clay are positively correlated with the compaction degree... Читать дальше...

Prosody matters: Preserved prominence marking strategies in people with Parkinson’s disease independent of motor status

Plos.org

by Tabea Thies, Michael T. Barbe, Doris Mücke

While many studies focus on segmental variation in Parkinsonian speech, little is known about prosodic modulations reflecting the ability to adapt to communicative demands in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD). This type of prosodic modulation is important for social interaction, and it involves modifications in speech melody (intonational level) and articulation of consonants and vowels (segmental level). The present study investigates phonetic... Читать дальше...

A refined reweighing technique for nondiscriminatory classification

Plos.org

by Yuefeng Liang, Cho-Jui Hsieh, Thomas C. M. Lee

Discrimination-aware classification methods remedy socioeconomic disparities exacerbated by machine learning systems. In this paper, we propose a novel data pre-processing technique that assigns weights to training instances in order to reduce discrimination without changing any of the inputs or labels. While the existing reweighing approach only looks into sensitive attributes, we refine the weights by utilizing both sensitive and insensitive ones. Читать дальше...

Impact of productive social safety net on households’ vulnerability to poverty in Tanzania

Plos.org

by Basil Msuha, Luitfred D. Kissoly

Social safety nets are expanding in Sub-Saharan Africa. While proponents perceive them as a means to combat poverty and vulnerability, opponents view them as wasteful use of scarce public resources and do not significantly overcome poverty. Previous studies have primarily focused on assessing the impact of these policies on current poverty levels, with insufficient evidence available regarding their impact on future poverty, which deserves equal attention. Multiple sclerosis and abnormal spermatozoa: A bidirectional two-sample mendelian randomization study

Plos.org

by Bo Li, Lingang Zhang, Qi Li, Jianhua Zhang, Wei Wang, Jianwen Quan

Objective

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, and previous observational epidemiological studies have suggested an association between MS and male infertility; male infertility due to sperm abnormalities may result from a number of aetiological factors, such as genetics, autoimmune factors, etc., and there are currently no studies to assess whether MS is associated with sperm abnormalities in men. Feasibility and reliability of online vs in-person cognitive testing in healthy older people

Plos.org

by Sol Morrissey, Rachel Gillings, Michael Hornberger

Background

Early evidence in using online cognitive assessments show that they could offer a feasible and resource-efficient alternative to in-person clinical assessments in evaluating cognitive performance, yet there is currently little understanding about how these assessments relate to traditional, in-person cognitive tests.

Objectives

In this preliminary study, we assess the feasibility and reliability of NeurOn, a novel online cognitive assessment tool. Читать дальше...

Interregional circulation of credit resources and company innovation

Plos.org

by Xinglin Liu, Yu Chen, Yan Xiong, Yanlin Wu

Although the impact of interest rates, repayment periods, and loan scales on loan consequences has been extensively studied, little attention has been paid to the geographical distance involved in loan transactions. This study collects the addresses of borrowing companies, listed companies, and banks. Nonlocal loans can be distinguished because the regional segmentations in the lending industry reflect the features of provincial boundaries. Using... Читать дальше...

Implementing a multi-cycle datapath with Liquid Marbles

Plos.org

by Sandro Erba, Luca Cavenaghi, Claudio Zandron

Liquid Marbles are liquid droplets encapsulated by hydrophobic powder particles; due to their non-wetting nature, they allow to manipulate liquids efficiently. Literature highlighted their potential to be employed as micro-reactors, micro-containers for growing micro-organisms and cells, micro-fluidics devices, and have also been used in the framework of unconventional computing. In this work, we discuss a theoretical implementation of all required... Читать дальше...

The impact of digital financial inclusion on bank performance: An exploration of mechanisms of action and heterogeneity

Plos.org

by Jing Zhao, Congqi Wang, Haslindar Ibrahim, Yanpeng Chen

The use of digital technology by banks and other financial institutions to facilitate financial inclusion is referred to as digital financial inclusion. This fusion of digital finance and traditional banking methods has the potential to impact banks’ operational effectiveness. This study uses the panel effects model to examine the link between digital financial inclusion and bank performance in 30 Chinese provinces from 2012 to 2021. Читать дальше...

CHRM3 (rs2165870) gene polymorphism is related to postoperative vomiting in female patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery. Prospective observational study

Plos.org

by Meng Cai, Lin Gan, Jing Li, Xiaofeng Lei, Jin Yu

Background

Postoperative nausea and vomiting are common complications after surgery, and female patients are more likely to experience these adverse events. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between the CHRM3 rs2165870 polymorphism and postoperative vomiting incidence in female patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery.

Methods

Two hundred female patients who underwent elective laparoscopic surgery with subsequent... Читать дальше...

Wild salmon migration routes influence sea lice infestations: An agent-based model predicting farm-related infestations on juvenile salmon

Plos.org

by Jaewoon Jeong, Gregor McEwan

This study presents an Agent-Based Model (ABM) simulation to assess the impact of varying migration routes on sea lice (Caligus clemensi) infestation levels in juvenile wild sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in the Discovery Islands, British Columbia, Canada. This research highlights the importance of migratory routes in determining the extent of exposure to sea lice originating from nearby salmon farms. Three northward out-migration routes were modelled... Читать дальше...
