Predicting metabolic potential in bacteria from limited genome data

Phys.org

How bacteria eat food, and what kinds of products they can make from that food, is dictated by the metabolic network of enzyme patterns encoded in their genomes. Using computational methods to learn these patterns across a large number of known bacteria allows the genome of a new bacteria to be analyzed. This reveals what kind of metabolism it is capable of—even when only partial information is provided, which is common in environmental samples.

Breakthrough in molecular control: New bioinspired double helix with switchable chirality

Phys.org

The deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA, the molecular system that carries the genetic information of living organisms, can transcribe and amplify information using its two helical strands. Creating such artificial molecular systems that match or surpass DNA in functionality is of great interest to scientists. Double-helical foldamers are one such molecular system.

The Perseids are here. Here's how to see the 'fireballs' of summer's brightest meteor shower

Times Union

The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak early Monday. Astronomers say it's one of the brightest and most easily visible showers of the year. This year’s peak activity coincides with a moon that is 44% full. More than 50 meteors should be visible per hour in rural areas away from city lights. Experts say the meteors will look like “fireballs” in the night sky. The Northern Hemisphere will have the best view. The Perseids last through Sept. 1. Multiple meteor showers occur annually and you don’t need special equipment to see them.
