Home hero Marchand targets more Olympic gold amid triathlon suspense

France24.com (en)

Marchand sent the crowd at La Defense Arena into a frenzy by winning the men's 400m individual medley on Sunday and can expect another red-hot atmosphere when he races in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke finals. The 22-year-old swam four times across the heats and semi-finals on Tuesday and hopes to have plenty left in the tank. "It's a lot for my system, so I'm going to have to sleep well, eat a lot, and I'll be ready," vowed Marchand, the poster boy for the Games in the French capital. Читать дальше...

Paulino dodges rain, aiming for Olympic 400m glory

France24.com (en)

The 27-year-old won two silvers at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics, in the 400m and the mixed 4x400m relay. Her 400m medal was a first-ever individual medal for a woman in athletics for the Dominican Republic. That became silver and gold at the 2022 world championships in Eugene as Paulino famously overtook her idol, US track legend Allyson Felix, to triumph in the relay. She struck individual gold a year later at the world championships in Budapest. "The Marileidy who arrived in Tokyo was... Читать дальше...

In reply to Jon. Ok, what about Matautia? Cover for second row, prop and centre.

Not for me he’s a player very much on the decline.

Of lads who are off contract I’d be looking at Jacob Alick-Wiencke from the Titans, 6’4” dynamic secondrow (who has covered centre). I don’t think the centre cover though is essential as that’s what Eckersley is in the squad for this and next year however it’s a good fallback position.

I don’t think there is any need for further prop cover. Читать дальше...

McIlroy eyeing 'probably biggest' win in 10 years at Olympics

France24.com (en)

The Northern Irishman fell agonisingly short of winning his first major title since 2014 at this year's US Open when he missed two short putts in the final three holes, losing by one shot to Bryson DeChambeau. The world number three then missed the British Open cut at Troon. McIlroy opted not to play when golf made its return to the Olympics after a 112-year absence at the 2016 Rio Games, saying he would not even watch the competition. But he has changed his tune since and narrowly missed out... Читать дальше...

World champion Springboks seek to improve dismal Brisbane record

France24.com (en)

The disastrous record of the Springboks there began in 1997 when beaten 32-20 by the Wallabies and includes a humiliating 49-0 drubbing nine years later. South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus is aware of the jinx, saying "Australia are a quality team and, historically, a force to be reckoned with at home". The Springboks leave Johannesburg on Wednesday for Sydney with a squad lacking some regular first choices due to injuries and a suspension, but containing 22 Rugby World Cup winners. Coco Gauff fumes over call in 3rd-round loss at Olympics

The Toledo Blade

PARIS — The scene felt all too familiar to Gauff. An officiating decision she was sure was wrong. A chair umpire who wouldn’t listen. Tears streaming down her cheeks. And, most disappointing of all, a loss, this time at the Paris Games.
