EU's suggestion on carbon tax not to help Indian firms much: GTRI

The EU's suggestion that India could avoid its carbon tax by imposing a similar levy locally will not help the domestic players much, as they would still be liable for the duty for their exports to the European Union, think tank GTRI said on Wednesday. The main issue is that carbon prices are usually based on a country's economic situation, so simply adding a local tax would not reduce the overall tax burden significantly, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. Rescuers search through debris as deaths rise to 151 India landslides

NEW DELHI — Hundreds of rescue workers searched through mud and debris Wednesday from multiple landslides that have killed at least 151 people in southern India, police said. The landslides occurred after torrential rains triggered torrents of mud and water that swept through tea estates and villages. Another 186 people were injured by the landslides that hit hilly areas in Kerala state's Wayanad district early Tuesday, flattening houses, uprooting trees and destroying bridges, said police officer Aijaz, who uses one name. MHA revises financial cap for informers in operational areas

The Ministry of Home Affairs enhanced the financial powers of Director Generals of paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies for rewards to informers. The cap is now Rs. 3,000 per person, up to Rs. 30,000 annually. Revisions also cover maintenance costs for foreign nationals and entertainment allowances for distinguished visitors. The last revision occurred in 2002.
