by Youngsin Kim, Mihyung Moon, Seokwhwan Moon, Wonkyu Moon

This work investigates whether inclusion of the low-frequency components of heart sounds can increase the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis of cardiovascular disorders. We standardized the measurement method to minimize changes in signal characteristics. We used the Continuous Wavelet Transform to analyze changing frequency characteristics over time and to allocate frequencies appropriately between the low-frequency and audible frequency bands. Cost-effectiveness of implementing performance-based financing for improving maternal and child health in Ethiopia

Introduction

Performance Based Financing (PBF) supports realization of universal health coverage by promoting bargaining between purchasers and health service providers through identifying priority services and monitoring indicators. In PBF, purchasers use health statistics and information to make decisions rather than merely reimbursing invoices. In this respect, PBF shares certain elements of strategic health purchasing. The impact firmly holds across various debt maturities and sources, with the most predominant driver witnessed in bank debt. We also investigate the potential underlying mechanism linking banking uncertainty to debt financing, thereby validating the working of three crucial channels... Читать дальше...

Dual-targeting class I HDAC inhibitor and ATM activator, SP-1-303, preferentially inhibits estrogen receptor positive breast cancer cell growth

by Mira Jung, Nicole Nicholas, Scott Grindrod, Anatoly Dritschilo

Dual-targeting chromatin regulation and DNA damage repair signaling presents a promising avenue for cancer therapy. Applying rational drug design, we synthesized a potent dual-targeting small molecule, SP-1-303. Here, we report SP-1-303 as a class I isoform selective histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and an activator of the ataxia-telangiectasia mutated protein (ATM). In vitro enzymatic assays demonstrated selective inhibition of HDAC1 and HDAC3. Читать дальше...

An optimised protocol for the detection of lipofuscin, a versatile and quantifiable marker of cellular senescence

Plos.org

by Camilla S. A. Davan-Wetton, Trinidad Montero-Melendez

Lipofuscin is a yellow-brown pigment typically found in the lysosomes that contains a mixture of molecules including lipids, metals and misfolded proteins. The use of Sudan black B to detect lipofuscin accumulation, a well described marker of cellular senescence and ageing, was first described in 2013 by Georgakopoulou, et al. Here, we provide an optimisation of the original protocol. Firstly, we adjusted the staining methodology for increased ease of use on cultured cells. Читать дальше...
