The Challenge of the Computer

Jamanetwork.com

The average physician is unlikely to build a computer in his basement from a kit. But the principles of computer analysis are not difficult to master. Evidence of the growing importance of these complex electronic machines is found in the announcement that the potential of the computer in medicine will be discussed at the 13th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association in San Francisco on Thursday, June 25th.

Patients Treated by Female Physicians Had Better Mortality Rates

Jamanetwork.com

Hospitalized patients in the US tended to have a lower chance of dying or being readmitted within 30 days when they were treated by female physicians rather than male clinicians, a recent study published in Annals of Internal Medicine found. The difference in outcomes for patients examined by female vs male physicians translated into 1 fewer death per 417 hospitalizations, and 1 fewer readmission per 208 hospitalizations, according to the researchers. Autoantibody Profile Emerged Years Before Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

Jamanetwork.com

About 10% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) had an autoantibody signature that was present at least 5 years before symptoms, according to an analysis of blood samples from 500 military service members. Researchers collected the first sample an average of 5 years before some participants started experiencing MS symptoms, and the second about 1 year after symptoms appeared. The findings were validated using an additional cohort of more than 100 patients who were enrolled during their first MS attack and later diagnosed with the disease.

CMS Finalizes Staffing Minimum Requirements for Nursing Homes

Jamanetwork.com

The US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently finalized a rule establishing the first minimum staffing requirements for nursing homes after an earlier version was proposed last September. The new rule will “hold nursing homes accountable for providing safe and high-quality care” for the 1.2 million people who are cared for in Medicare- and Medicaid-certified long-term care facilities, the agency announced.

Changes to Medicare, Medicaid Coverage Could Cause Thousands of Deaths

Jamanetwork.com

Some policymakers have suggested increasing the eligibility age for Medicare and implementing work requirements for Medicaid coverage to reduce US health care costs. However, a recent analysis involving data projections from the Census Bureau suggests that the proposed changes would cost thousands of lives without saving the government as much money as expected.

New HHS Rule Strengthens Privacy Around US Reproductive Care

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced a final rule that increases privacy protections for people seeking legal reproductive care, such as an abortion, either in their home state or by traveling to another one. The modification to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule also shores up privacy protections for clinicians who have provided those treatments.

Urine-Based Test Could Help Identify Aggressive Prostate Cancer

A urine-based test involving 18 genes was more accurate at diagnosing high-grade prostate cancer than existing biomarker tests such as blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), according to a recent study published in JAMA Oncology.

Pregnancy Complications Tied to Higher Risk of Death Decades Later

Jamanetwork.com

Pregnant people who experienced adverse pregnancy outcomes had up to a 50% increased risk of dying from any cause up to 46 years after giving birth, according to data from a cohort study involving about 2.2 million participants from Sweden who gave birth between 1973 and 2015. Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cancer, and diabetes were the major specific causes of death linked with adverse pregnancy outcomes.

WHO Updates Terminology for Pathogens That Spread Through the Air

Jamanetwork.com

A multiyear global collaboration among public health agencies has led to new terminology for pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 that can spread through the air, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced. The report by the WHO and partners, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, moves away from the dichotomy of “aerosols” and “droplets” that sparked debate and confusion during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Antipsychotics for Dementia Tied to More Serious Harms Than Expected

Jamanetwork.com

Prior research has suggested that antipsychotic drugs might be overprescribed for people with dementia, despite known risks of stroke and sudden cardiac death. Now, findings from a new study in The BMJ indicate that the range of serious adverse outcomes associated with antipsychotics in these patients might be broader than previously thought.
