Extreme heatwave conditions across India have significantly impacted restaurants, pubs, and bars, leading to a sharp decline in sales and footfalls, with some outlets reporting up to a 40% decrease. Al fresco dining and high street locations are worst affected, especially during lunch hours, which are seeing a notable drop in business. The heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in some places, has led people to avoid outdoor dining, impacting sales till about 6 pm.

A Godfrey Phillips spokesperson rejected the accusation. "These allegations are entirely false and atrocious," the person said. "The alleged episode occurred outside the board room when the audit committee meeting was in progress at about 12 noon. This has been captured on in-house CCTV cameras, which can be provided to the relevant investigating authorities."

This is the highest annual growth since FY17, excluding the 9.7% post-Covid rebound in gross domestic product (GDP) in FY22 after the 5.8% contraction in FY21. The advance estimate released in February had pegged FY24 growth at 7.6%. Economists and government expect the high growth to continue though tepid private consumption remains a concern.

In absolute terms, the FY24 fiscal deficit stood at ?16.54 lakh crore, down from the revised estimate of ?17.35 lakh crore and FY23 level of ?17.38 lakh crore, showed the official data released on Friday. A lower-than-anticipated deficit in FY24 and a generous surplus transfer by RBI earlier this month make the government's goal of reining in fiscal gap at 5.1% of GDP in FY25 seem more realistic now, experts said.
