Effects of Nox4 upregulation on PECAM-1 expression in a mouse model of diabetic retinopathy

Plos.org

by Jinli Wang, Daniel A. Lai, Joshua J. Wang, Sarah X. Zhang

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of vision loss in working-age adults. The hallmark features of DR include vascular leakage, capillary loss, retinal ischemia, and aberrant neovascularization. Although the pathophysiology is not fully understood, accumulating evidence supports elevated reactive oxygen species associated with increased activity of NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) as major drivers of disease progression. Previously... Читать дальше...

Predictive value of anthropometric measurements in survival and free walking ability of geriatric hip fractures after surgery

Plos.org

by Liqiang Wang, Zhibang Zhao, Wenliang Fan, Yuan Yao, Qingbo Chu

Background

We aimed to explore the predictive value of anthropometric measurements in survival and free walking ability of geriatric hip fractures after surgery.

Methods

Eight common anthropometric measurements, including arm circumference (AC), waist circumference (WC), thigh circumference (TC), calf circumference (CC), biceps skinfold (BS), triceps skinfold (TS), suprailiac skinfold (SIS), and subscapular skinfold (SSS)... Читать дальше...

Enhancing ESG learning outcomes through gamification: An experimental study

Plos.org

by Fang Zhang

This study investigates the effectiveness of gamification in enhancing learning outcomes in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) education. Employing a cluster randomized experiment, the research involved 22 classes from four universities, divided into gamified and traditional teaching groups. The gamified group engaged with ESG concepts through interactive, game-like elements, while the control group followed standard educational practices. The study aimed to determine... Daily exposure to stressors, daily perceived severity of stress, and mortality risk among US adults

Plos.org

by Dana A. Glei, Maxine Weinstein

Prior studies of perceived stress and mortality have yielded mixed results, but most are based on one-time measurements of perceived stress. We use daily diary data from the Midlife in the United States study to measure exposure to stressors and perceived severity of stress and investigate their associations with mortality. We also explore whether the associations vary by age and assess whether the associations are stronger for extrinsic than intrinsic mortality... Читать дальше...

Managerial (dis)preferences towards employees working from home: Post-pandemic experimental evidence

Plos.org

by Agnieszka Kasperska, Anna Matysiak, Ewa Cukrowska-Torzewska

Work from home (WFH) has been a part of the professional landscape for over two decades, yet it was the COVID-19 pandemic that has substantially increased its prevalence. The impact of WFH on careers is rather ambiguous, and a question remains open about how this effect is manifested in the current times considering the recent extensive and widespread use of WFH during the pandemic. To answer these questions, this article investigates... Читать дальше...

The perceived catchiness of music affects the experience of groove

Plos.org

by Toni Amadeus Bechtold, Ben Curry, Maria Witek

Catchiness and groove are common phenomena when listening to popular music. Catchiness may be a potential factor for experiencing groove but quantitative evidence for such a relationship is missing. To examine whether and how catchiness influences a key component of groove–the pleasurable urge to move to music (PLUMM)–we conducted a listening experiment with 450 participants and 240 short popular music clips of drum patterns, bass lines or keys/guitar parts. LADRC-based grid-connected control strategy for single-phase LCL-type inverters

Plos.org

by Zhi Feng, Xiaojie Zhou, Chan Wang, Weizhou Huang, Ziqi Chen

To ensure that grid-connected currents are of high quality, it is crucial to optimize the dynamic performance of grid-connected inverters and their control. This study suggests using a combination of reduced-order linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) and a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller. By applying this control strategy to a single-phase photovoltaic grid-connected system, the system’s ability to suppress grid harmonics is significantly improved. Читать дальше...
