Comprehensive evaluation and application of woody plants in the green spaces of parks in saline–Alkaline areas from a low-carbon perspective: A case study of Tianjin Qiaoyuan Park

Plos.org

by Jieyuan Bai, Hongcheng Wang

The field of landscape architecture has placed significant emphasis on low-carbon landscapes due to the increasing challenges posed by global warming and environmental deterioration in recent years. The soil ecological conditions in saline–alkaline areas are characterized by poor quality, resulting in suboptimal growth conditions for trees. This, in turn, hampers their ability to effectively sequester carbon, thereby diminishing the potential benefits of carbon sinks. Читать дальше...

An evaluation of the effects of localised skin cooling on microvascular, inflammatory, structural, and perceptual responses to sustained mechanical loading of the sacrum: A study protocol

Plos.org

by Ralph J. F. H. Gordon, Peter R. Worsley, Davide Filingeri

This study protocol aims to investigate how localised cooling influences the skin’s microvascular, inflammatory, structural, and perceptual tolerance to sustained mechanical loading at the sacrum, evaluating factors such as morphology, physiology, and perceptual responses. The protocol will be tested on individuals of different age, sex, skin tone and clinical status, using a repeated-measure design with three participants cohorts... Читать дальше...

UV-Vis quantification of the iron content in iteratively steam and HCl purified single-walled carbon nanotubes

Plos.org

by Markus Martincic, Gerard Tobías-Rossell

As-produced carbon nanotubes contain impurities which can dominate the properties of the material and are thus undesired. Herein we present a multi-step purification treatment that combines the use of steam and hydrochloric acid in an iterative manner. This allows the reduction of the iron content down to 0.2 wt. % in samples of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Remarkably, Raman spectroscopy analysis reveals that this purification strategy... Читать дальше...

Circulating hypervirulent Marek’s disease viruses in vaccinated chicken flocks in Taiwan by genetic analysis of meq oncogene

Plos.org

by Ming-Chu Cheng, Guan-Hua Lai, Yi-Lun Tsai, Yi-Yang Lien

Marek’s disease (MD) is an important neoplastic disease caused by serotype 1 Marek’s disease virus (MDV-1), which results in severe economic losses worldwide. Despite vaccination practices that have controlled the MD epidemic, current increasing MD-suspected cases indicate the persistent viral infections circulating among vaccinated chicken farms in many countries. However, the lack of available information about phylogeny and molecular... Читать дальше...

Factors affecting the number of influenza patients before and during COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand

Plos.org

by Oiythip Yasopa, Nontiya Homkham, Pornthip Chompook

This study was aimed to explore the association between potential factors including public health and social measures and the number of influenza patients in Thailand between 2014–2021. Secondary data from relevant agencies were collected. Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) and regression coefficient (β) were performed at a significance level of 0.05. We found factors associated with number of influenza patients during the time prior... Читать дальше...

Implementation of an innovative ERAS protocol in cardiac surgery: A qualitative evaluation from patients’ perspective

Plos.org

by Mona Elisabeth Schmid, Sina Stock, Evaldas Girdauskas

Objective

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols aim to optimize the recovery process for patients after surgical interventions and focus on patient-centered care. In cardiac surgery, the ERAS concept is still in its early stages. Our university hospital has implemented an innovative ERAS protocol for minimally invasive heart valve surgery since 2021. Therefore, our study aimed to comprehensively assess the patient experience... Читать дальше...

Itaconic acid inhibits nontuberculous mycobacterial growth in pH dependent manner while 4-octyl-itaconic acid enhances THP-1 clearance of nontuberculous mycobacteria in vitro

Plos.org

by Paul Breen, Madsen Zimbric, Lindsay J. Caverly

Increasingly prevalent, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections affect approximately 20% of people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Previous studies of CF sputum identified lower levels of the host metabolite itaconate in those infected with NTM. Itaconate can inhibit the growth of M. tuberculosis (MTB) in vitro via the inhibition of the glyoxylate cycle enzyme (ICL), but its impact on NTM is unclear. To test itaconic acid’s (IA) effect on NTM growth... Читать дальше...

Epidemiology of tularemia in the countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO): A systematic review and meta-analysis

Plos.org

by Mohammad Sholeh, Safoura Moradkasani, Saber Esmaeili

Background

Francisella tularensis, the bacterium that causes tularemia, has been a persistent and widespread pathogen in various regions of the world for centuries. Francisella tularensis can affect humans and various domestic and wild animals. The current study aimed to determine the epidemiological status of tularemia in countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) through a systematic review and meta-analysis.
