BHEKANI Mlilo, a 39-year-old man linked to the dramatic US$4 million Ecobank armed robbery in Bulawayo, has been arrested while trying to sneak into Botswana from South Africa.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the latest breakthrough in the ongoing manhunt following the high-profile heist that took place on 3 October 2024.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of another suspect, Bhekani Mlilo (39), in connection with the armed robbery case,” read the statement.
Mlilo was apprehended on 14 July 2025 by authorities in Botswana as he attempted to enter the country from South Africa. Zimbabwean authorities are now working on securing his extradition.
“The due processes of the law are now taking effect for the suspect’s extradition to Zimbabwe,” Comm Nyathi said.
His arrest follows the earlier capture of brothers Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu in South Africa. The trio is believed to be part of a well-organized gang that pulled off one of Zimbabwe’s biggest cash robberies in recent years.
Police say the hunt is far from over.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still pursuing the arrest of the other suspects who are linked to this case,” Comm Nyathi added.
More explosive details are expected to be released as the net tightens around the remaining fugitives.
