Oklahoma City creates plan to address roadway fatality increase
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Oklahoma City saw its most roadway fatalities in 2021 with 99. Some city officials believe if action isn't taken now, that number will increase.
Most traffic fatalities occur on streets where speed limits are 45 miles per hour or more, but there are other areas showing needs of a change as well.
So, the city has created a "Vision Zero Plan."
"We want to take a big multi-prong approach to trying to bring that number down," said Justin Henry, Transportation Program Planner.
Roadway deaths in Oklahoma City have risen drastically over the last few years. City officials have determined there are a few reasons why.
"We've seen a little bit of increase in speeding related fatalities," Henry said. "Some spots where lack of lighting in intersections we think is contributing to extra crashes."
They want your help to figure out which areas cause the most problems, so they opened an online map survey where you can pin point specific locations that need safety improvements.
"It's vital that we get a lot of public input on our Vision Zero plan," Henry said. "The public drives these streets every day. They walk the streets every day. They know what they see is dangerous areas. All that feedback will just help inform our plan and make it a better plan to address those trouble spots."
They will take the publics input, then assess which areas need to be addressed.
"Roundabouts have been a proven measure to reduce fatalities and serious injuries in intersections," Henry said. "We also think that there will be additional street lighting called for as part of this plan to increase visibility."
Along with the online survey, they will also hold two events in June, where you can attend in person, to learn about the "Vision Zero Plan" and give input about dangerous roadways.
Saturday, June 15 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Juneteenth on the East, located at NE 23rd between Hood Avenue and Kelham Avenue.
Wednesday, June 26 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Mid-Week Farmers Market in Scissortail Park’s Lower Park located at 1423 South Robinson Avenue.
